Soundimageplus camera of the year 2020 - Huawei P40 Pro

Now the Huawei P40 Pro isn't the best camera I have, but it's the most remarkable. This is a phone after all. It's easily the best smartphone camera out there, due to it's larger sensor and Leica designed lenses. As a phone it's maybe not that great because it has no google apps, thanks to the US telling the world that Huawei are intent on spying on us! But it does actually work as a stand alone camera.

In 35mm terms you have a lens range from 18mm-120mm, close up ability and an option to create 50MP raw files. For video it has the most incredible image stabilisation I've ever used.

So, is it part of a trend that means that smartphones will eventually take over from stand alone cameras? No I don't think they will, not for serious photographers anyway. Smartphones are meant for convenience and for snapshots and social media. However, the Huawei P40 Pro is easily good enough for my stock work. I will always get better results from my 'proper' cameras, but the Huawei is certainly good enough for the majority of my stock work and is an excellent backup. Sometimes I need a break from carrying cameras and lenses around and the P40 Pro is an excellent alternative. Small, light and unobtrusive (even with my BeastGrip attached) it's a joy to use.

Now I'm a dyed in the wool old school photographer, I still use film for heavens sake, but the Huawei P40 Pro gives me a different kind of photographic experience and one that I enjoy. And it's lurking in my pocket when I remove it from the grip. I would again make the point that this is not a replacement for my Nikons, but it's fun to use and it does produce excellent results considering what it is. It's a triumph for innovation and technology and you only have to realise that if Leica are involved it has both a future and a status beyond other smartphones. I have no no hesitation in naming it my Soundimageplus Blog camera of the year.
