Two videos I watched recently, from Dpreview and Luminous Landscape used a somewhat ominous phrase - The 'Photographic Industry'. The implication being that's what they were talking about. Because these YouTube photographic 'gurus' are no longer just reviewing and comparing cameras, they have taken to pontificating about the state of the various camera manufacturers and offering their opinions on what they should do and how they will perform. So basically some kind of 'Bloomberg Channel' analysis. I turned them both off, thinking 'What on earth has that got to do with me??'
The answer to that is absolutely nothing. Because I simply don't care about whether Nikon and Canon will make a success of their FF mirrorless cameras. If they make something that appeals to me I may buy it, if they don't I won't. And I really don't care whether some company goes bust, unless of course it impacts on the resale value of gear that I own. And yes I have expressed my frustration at what some of those manufacturers choose to do (or not do). However, it is certainly not my purpose in this blog to offer my economic analysis of the 'photographic industry'. Because what do I know?
Well in fact I know about as much as those who are only too willing to give us their opinion. Because one thing is for sure, those who make these amateurish annoying videos have no 'insider knowledge' into what the suits in the boardrooms of Nikon, Canon and Sony are deciding. Their track record at predictions is pretty poor. And is it a surprise? Well no, because all this is is an attempt to put together some kind of click bait so they can make money.
Following on from this I've noticed that a high % of these photographic internet opinionated YouTubers are old ugly white men*. Some also seem to have had a snack (or three!) before appearing in front of the camera. Personally, I'm not a fan of watching people with 'skin issues' stumbling over their words as they spout some ill thought out b******s. Young, male and female, photographers with the skill and vision to inspire us don't seem to take part, with the odd exception and that's a shame. But then maybe we get what we deserve. The obsession is with the gear and the specs. and not with creating images.
So as in the title 'F**k the Photography industry'. After all they have spent a lot of time doing just that to us. What we don't need is the OUWM* doing their job for them. Ignore them and they go broke. Watching their drivel just encourages them. If you get something out of some greybeard droning on about nothing then, that's up to you. But wouldn't that time be better spent, photoraphing, editing photographs or thinking about how to do it better? Now that's a radical thought!!
