Serendipity and the Sony A7r and Voigtländer 90mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar SL-II

It was this picture above that's convinced me not to return my completely useless Kipon Canon EF to Sony e-mount adapter. I created this image using the Voigtlander wide-open, because that's all I can do with this adapter and as you can see there is some fearsome vignetting. The pictures below still have that as well but not quite as bad.

'Inspired' by using inappropriate gear to accidentally achieve a result I liked, I got the tripod out, set the Sony A7r to ISO 50 and shot the above. They have elements of images that got created in the early 1900's with vignetting and wide apertures and the modern high contrast, high saturation, high resolution images that get created these days. And while they may be pretentious, use crap gear and call it choice and self determination, self conscious mistakes made out to be 'art' I like them very much.

The Voigtander 90mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar SL-II is a lens that certainly has character and a unique bokeh wide open. These images, while certainly the result of a serendipitous adapter mismatch resulting from my quest to get some lenses I like for my Sony FE system, have a look I can work with and explore. I'm normally a straight down the line, keep it simple kind of photographer. But I'm also a photographer who likes to say yes rather than no, to trying different things and exploring new possibilities. Who knows how long I will pursue this kind of picture making, but I'm inclined to keep a piece of gear that patently doesn't do what it's supposed to do but by default creates something unusual.

Another happy accident. I seem to be having a lot of those lately with my Sony cameras.
