SOUNDIMAGEPLUS: Panasonic m4/3 - Picture taking made easy with the GX7 plus 14-42mm and 45-175mm X power zoom lenses.

I still haven't made my mind up what to do about my Panasonic m4/3 cameras, the GX7 and GM1. And the recently announced FZ-1000 offers the alternative of selling everything and buying one of those. It looks an incredible camera and one that would suit what I do perfectly, particularly since the image samples I've seen look somewhat better than the Sony RX100 and RX10. Same sensor possibly, but whether that's the case or not, certainly a much better jpg. rendition. Odd really, considering how good the A7r and a6000 jpgs. are.

However, whatever I decide to do, a recent trip out with my GX7 and 14-42mm and 45-175mm X power zoom lenses made me realise just how easy, slick and fast current Panasonic m4/3 cameras and lenses are. Instant and accurate AF with these two lenses, excellent image stabilisation, superb out of camera colour rendition, low noise at low ISO's and lovely sharp glossy files that take very little time and effort to get good results from raw.

Having not used the GX7 for a while in this mode, i.e. hand-held for stills, I was impressed by how well the whole system handles. And it's small and light. In fact one of the reasons I'm considering selling some of my current m4/3 gear is it's too small and light for me. The GM1 is a great camera, but I don't find it very usable. No viewfinder is a problem, though if it had one, it's so small that I'm not sure that would improve things much. One of the things I like about the FZ-1000 is that it's big and chunky without being back breaking. Despite opinions to the contrary, for me there are situations where cameras can be TOO small.

There are alternatives of course in m4/3 both in terms of lenses and bodies of course, for me to get something more substantial to hold on too. But then the cameras I have are so good for video, that I wouldn't like to loose that. And that's where I really don't mind the size.

I would of course, as ever like to keep everything, but that's neither possible or desirable. However, there is no doubt that Panasonic design cameras to make taking pictures simple and easy and there's nothing wrong with that. If only all manufacturers took the same attitude.
