All images - Panasonic GX7 - 7-14mm zoom lens
In my post yesterday, I wrote about the things that Mirrorless cameras can offer that DSLR's can't and I included this lens in that. Yes there are some W/A zooms and some of them, including the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 are very good indeed. But none of them will do what the 7-14mm does. That combination of 7mm DOF and the ultra-wide angle is one of a kind. Yesterday I was at Hidcote Manor, one of the most famous show gardens in the world and I knew the the 7-14mm would be a great lens to use there. I particularly like using it at a low angle and creating pictures with crazy perspective.
It's also a very high quality lens. Yes, there are some better lenses optically, including I suspect the Fuji 10-24mm, but the Panasonic still produces very sharp images. The edges and corners can look a bit 'stretched' particularly at the 7mm end, but I'm prepared to put up with that to get it's unique perspective on the world. The Sigma 8-16mm APS-C zoom is wider, but it's big and heavy whereas the Panasonic is small and light and well suited to what I was shooting yesterday.
It's very much a lens that has it's own signature and in the past I've actually had three others. I've usually bought them for an indoors property shoot to shoot small rooms with and then sold them on, but I've hung onto this one for a while now. I don't use it that often, but I'm always impressed with what it can do when I do use it. For me one of the reasons I find m4/3 such an attractive format. And also one of the reasons I prefer using m4/3 cameras to DSLR's.
